Nöel Calendar: What happens in Afghanistan…

Written on December 19th, 2009 by Åse Bredeli Røyset

…doesn’t stay in Afghanistan. Not when Ann Sung-an Lee is around to document it and without thinking twice shares the most intimate details on anything from excrements to wanting to quit the band she’s touring with, via the lopsided bodyshapes of American soldiers. This tour diary of The Cables’ journey through Afghan military bases is the most interesting read Nö Music has produced this year — with complete denouncements of predjudices and beliefs of “what war is”:

«Whatever non-violent, non-militaristic dogmas we might have had, have gone right out the window and we’re tank-ridin’ military babes, salutin’ to the flag, God bless Norway, heia Norge! and one more things for definite — we LOVE the Norwegian military…»

Now, that’s out of context — you should revisit the Afghanistan story here, and to make the pleasure last longer, here’s one of Ann’s analogue photos.
