Decent December: Fjorden Baby!

Written on December 16th, 2009 by Linn Nystadnes

Our December questionnaire tackles December stress issues (usually referred to as “the joy of Yuletide”),  and gives the year gone bad, I mean gone by, the benefit of hindsight.

Here’s Fjorden Baby! going MC5 on Afghanistan, being cute for Christmas, moving towards De La Soul and the man in the mirror.   …uncensored.

Record stores are crowded this time of year. What are you looking for specifically?
We know it’s crowded. It’s annoying on Christmas holiday. We are looking for a better way to buy music during this season. But not MP3. Real CDs.

Say Santa had a mean record collection and some swanky musical toys laying around, and being the jolly f*cker he is, lets you fill your stocking (yes, it’s a big ass stocking); what weird shape would your sock take?
Cute stuffs. Christmas is about being cute. A Morgan Guitar Package at the local music store is not cute. Neither are drum/guitar hero. It don’t fit under the Christmas tree. We would love to stash the socks with Stylophone, Mini-Theremin, Kaossilator, microkorg and a delay pedal so that the kids can go crazy making dub effects.

Stroking that “high fidelity” guilty pleasure; any sucky mix tape-gift stories…?
Sturle, our vocalist, got only one present for Christmas once when he was a teenager. And that was the Fountains Of Wayne single, “Sink To The Bottom with you” from his uncle in the states. We felt a bit sorry for him.

The year came, it saw and soon it’s going away… What or who got more attention then it or they deserved this year?
Barack Obama shouldn’t say “Yes Please” to the Nobel Peace Prize, considering he is a black guy leading a war against brown people in the mountains of Afghanistan. Free the Weed! (For more on Afghanistan, click here. Red.)

Who deserved more attention?
It’s hard to name someone this year that actually has NOT got attention.

1st of January; new beginning or a day of shame?
Every day is a beginning of a new shame.

Say you actually believed in New Years Resolutions; what would be your top 5?
We believe the revolutions start preferably in the bathroom mirror. Considering that we all have to live inside the others life. “I’m starting with the man in the mirror”.

Have you got a master plan for the new year? If you have, who would be the mastermind behind it?

Are there conflicting motives between making plans and making music?
Yes indeed. It might be easy to tune a guitar while your life is out of tune. Regardless.

Do you make conscious decisions when it comes to what direction your musical expression will take?
No. As for us being five different individuals with different musical thoughts and preference it’s really hard to make one decision. We have tried, but it doesn’t work for us. But we are satisfied with our own culture and rituals. So far it’s been working out great. Our new bass player, however, is a very stand up guy who likes music such as Napalm Death, Sonic Youth and De La Soul. So u can easily say that our music has taken some new directions:)

How do you feel about musicians who do?
People are free to do whatever they choose to do. Either the highway or the U-Bahn. It’s not up to us. It’s so much more to focus on than thinking how other people live their lives. nazi White Trash Fuck Off. However, we are in to Alice Copper nowadays (sic).
