Shining stream ‘Fisheye’

Written on December 2nd, 2009 by Dan Roberts

Blackjazz, the latest album from jazz/metal/classical/experimental behemoth Shining is due on January 25th, and the first single from the follow up to the pretty mindblowing Grindstone is out now on iTunes. The digital version of ‘Fisheye’, exclusive to the Apple site, includes an extended version that is much longer than that slated to appear on the album itself.

Whether or not you make that purchase, however, you should certainly check out the ‘TV Edit’ of ‘Fisheye’ that the band are streaming for a limited period on their MySpace. A barrage of screeching rave-metal guitars make this perhaps the band’s most powerful track yet, and the vocals - sounding like a twisted call-and-response between a demonic killer and his hysterical victim, alternately barking or stuttering out a hypnotic and frightening cryptic verse - ensure you will come away both spooked and hooked. Has a jazz band ever evolved to be as scary as this?
