If you make a lot of ceramics; ceramics will make a lot of you as well is one of the latest albums from the, Oslo based, Metronomicon Audio community/label. This is the debut album from Pilemil, and according to the press release, the inception of Pilemil was brought about by the coming together of artists and craftsmen, sharing a studio, with a common enthusiasm for making music. Assuming the genesis was indeed random, there is an odd coherence to this strangely endearing album.
Though energetic and free spirited, the odd mesh of organic and digital tomfoolery is militantly bound, with a purposeful yet indefinable cadence, a unification of ideas that struts it way through IYMALOCCWMALOYASW (what an acronym!)- keeping the happenings in check. Presented as new wave/indie pop, Pilemil would line up appropriately alongside Architecture in Helsinki (though less manic), Late of the Pier (though less discopunk) and Animal Collective (though less optimistic) - upon ones hipster mantle. However, Pilemil can stake claim to possessing a definably different and distinct sound amongst their peers.
Within this short album (barley 30 mins) there is rich diversity crammed amongst the 8 tracks, each showcasing nods to various genres and grooves. Nevertheless, amongst this assortment lurks an ever present quantity that ties each track together, a slightly unsettling quirky melancholy in the vocals - unquestionably influenced by Syd Barrett. The Barrett influence is most strongly felt in “Lateout”, the atmosphere created by the lyrical progressions and jittery acoustic guitar emits those subtle lunatic overtones, which will ring true to any fan of the late madcapper. Indeed, there is a trace of mid 60s, distinctly English, underground psychedelia teeming throughout this entire album.
Despite its meager running time, this album keeps calling you back for more, it’s light and punchy, yet intricate and seducing, it’s fun and wacky, yet twisted and unhinged. Pilemil dares to ride on the cusp of indulgence and gets away with it, hopefully there is more to follow soon.
