‘Oslo 2′ - defining the sound of Oslo-indie

Written on October 20th, 2009 by Åse Bredeli Røyset

Spring 2008, Oslo: The Norwegian capital is as indie as ever. Oslo! is released to document it. A sampler of 16 indie bands doing what they do best, pop. A year and a half later, and the indie just won’t stop. So there we go, Oslo 2 is ready to hit the streets.

image002Seven of the bands from Oslo! have made it to the sequel, with familiar names such as Zoom-tour winners Norma Sass, Urørt ‘09 finalists Children and Corpse Playing in the Street, Therese Aune and Einar Stray. New to the project are Go Fandango!, Seppuku Zephyr Dance, Like Spinning, Casa Murilo and Firetop Mountain.

Also worth noticing, is Oslo Grammofon’s rare little sampler CD-r from January this year. While the aforementioned Oslo-compilations embrace the indie pop trend, Oslo Grammofon presented the dreamier shoegazing side of the city’s identity, with bands like Le Corbeau, I Was A King, Je Suis Animal and Sally Suicide, side by side with (even) more obscure tracks from Anne Lise Frøkedal, Pica Pica and Happy Dagger. Read more about this on Oslo Grammofon’s website - it’s worth a peek.

Anyway, back to the present and Oslo 2. According to distributors Tuba, “some people” have even claimed Oslo is taking up the competition of Indie-pop Capital of Scandinavia with Stockholm. Here at Nö Music we know nothing about such an honour, but then again we never knew Stockholm was it.

Out 16th November 2009, Oslo 2 features the following songs:

01. Cold Mailman - Time Is Of Essence
02. Hiawata! - Valley Boys
03. Children And Corpse Playing In The Streets - France
04. The Little Hands Of Asphalt - The Next Time We Meet
05. Einar Stray - Arrows
06. Therese Aune - Chamelon
07. Firetop Mountain - How Can You Dance At A Time Like This
08. Go Fandango - End Credits
09. Norma Sass - Born In The 80s
10. Monzano - Cold Waters
11.  Casa Murilo - Murilo I Love You
12. Like Spinning - Crush (And Naivety)
13. Seppuku Zephyr Dance - Carousel
14. Yoyoyo Acapulco - Facial
15. My Little Pony - Capital Of Norway
16. Nomber 5s - Dancing To The Oslo Beat
