Serena Maneesh and diskJokke launch Høvikodden Live 2009

Written on August 27th, 2009 by Åse Bredeli Røyset

Missing Revolver’s Sensible Sundays in Oslo? Surely they’ll start up again soon, meanwhile there’s arty Sundays at Henie Onstad Art Centre until 8th October — for those who care to re-evaluate the vocal contribution to pictorial art instead. Perhaps not as mind-numbing, but could very well make up for that in blow-you-away-ness.

Serena Maneesh and diskJokke are two of the acts launching Høvikodden Live 2009: To be Heard is to be Seen, a political art series describing voice and performativity, art and installation — looking at the concept of ‘live’ within art institutions. Curated by Norwegian noise artist Lasse Marhaug with Tone Hansen and Lars Mørch Finborud the coming six Sundays at Henie Onstad is in their own words dedicated to investigating «the power of the voice as a performative element in music and as a visual component of pictorial art».

While diskJokke and Serena Maneesh are perhaps not mainly recognized for the vocal contribution within their music, their use of voice as an instrument rather than a pure conveyor of lyrics is none the less note-worthy. The shoegazers promise an intergalactic makkverk featuring Ådne Meisfjord (129 Days, Lucid Dream Team) and Kåre João (Caveman). Their concerts this Sunday is preceeded by the world premiere of Sunnn0)))-figure Stephen O’Malley’s commissioned work Petite Geante, Tori Wrånes’ voice/sculpture performance and sound installation artist Simona Barbera.

The continuation of Høvikodden Live 2009 follows every Sunday at 14:00, presenting cream of the crop vocal artists and experimental musicians. Sidsel Endresens, Noxagt, Maja Ratke and Attila Csihar’s (Mayhem, Tormento) voice/sampler project Void Ov Voices are only a few of the stand-out names thrown at you.
