Once again Oslo’s little record shop Tiger is popping the champagne corks. One year after venturing into the label industry with their very own Fysisk Format, they are expanding into distro, under the fitting name Diger (Norwegian for ‘huge’).
Their distro ethos is quality before quantity — presenting a less substantial catalogue than your average distributor, but with all the more focus on particular artist — first and foremost bringing the best from the Norwegian underground closer to its native audience. The latest names on their roster include Children and Corpse Playing in the Streets and Kråkesølv, while avant-garde heavyweights Årabrot, Le Corbeau and Andre Borgen are already amongst the Diger ranks.
According to Tiger’s general manager Kristian Kallevik they too feel the side effects of the current economic and record industry dump, but it only concerns a small part of their business — the major artists. It is the abundance of small artists that keeps the tiger going, and fans of music that needs to be dug out and personally tended to still enjoy purchasing their records on physical formats in a little concrete shop in downtown Oslo.
«Enthusiasm has never been big business and Tiger has existed more in spite of than due to the general industry,» Kallevik says, and believes this makes Tiger less subject to the so-called downfall of the record industry. After all, as Kallevik points out, they were never blessed by the industry’s glory days, so why should they be cursed by its opposite?
The latest link in Tiger’s DIYnasty launches with a pow 9th July, upstairs Internasjonalen in Oslo. With Children and Corpse Playing in the Streets (Live), Diger DJS, and you get the first chance to pick up the latest copy of Øya’s zine Fan.
