Of all the Norwegian acts to make inroads abroad in recent years Röyksopp have been the most successful. By miles. So the frustration engendered by the downtempo duo’s apparent inactivity and complete silence on all matters relating to album three has not just been a Norwegian phenomenon: it is fair to say that hundreds of thousands of music fans worldwide have been thirsting for far too long after a new Röyksopp release. Ready for this then? The as-yet-unnamed third album by Röyksopp will be released in October. That’s this October. That’s the October that is coming in little over a month.
There had been some confusion surrounding the band’s relationship with label EMI, but it seems that all is relatively rosy in the smoke-mushroom garden. Bjørn Rogstad, General Manager of Emi Music Norway, has confirmed the news to Norwegian red-top VG and revealed the reason for the interminably long wait: Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland are massive perfectionists. Which just makes the pressure to deliver even greater, cos you’ve had a looong time to perfect, guys.
What the album is going to be like is still largely a mystery, but as we reported earlier the band told BBC Radio 1 that the album is ‘more progressive; not progressive like in “progressive house”, but more progressive as in “progressive rock”’, and Lykke Li looks set to be included after she sang live on the new track ‘Korene’ in Molde last year, whilst the band have also reportedly confirmed that their love of Swedish pop queens doesn’t end there: they are rumoured to have hauled Robyn in to sing guest vocals on another song.
This is gonna be the longest September ever.
